Everything in this reel was shot, edited, graded or animated by OFI students and the working team that teaches them — wedding films, music videos, street cinematography from Kathmandu, colour work, motion design and photographs. Nothing here is stock footage and nothing was bought. It is simply what gets made in and around our classrooms, and it is the most honest advertisement we have.
The short answer is repetitions with feedback. Every piece in this reel went through the same loop our courses are built on: shoot or cut, screen it, take critique, revise, screen it again. First versions are never this good — nobody's are. The difference a structured review culture makes over a few months is exactly what you are seeing, and it is the strongest argument for learning in a room with mentors instead of alone with tutorials.
Much of this footage comes from real productions — actual weddings, actual events, actual commissioned projects — that students joined as crew alongside our professional team. Working under real conditions, where the moment does not repeat and the client is waiting, builds a completely different quality of skill than exercises ever can. It also means students graduate with client work, not classwork, in their portfolios.
Every showreel refresh includes new student work, and choosing what goes in is one of our favourite arguments of the year. Every piece that enters this reel has to survive the same questions a paying client would ask: does the story land, does the pacing breathe, is the audio clean, do the colours hold together, would a studio put its name on this? Student work is revised until the answer is yes — which is why the gap between a first draft and what you see here is the real curriculum.
When studios review reels, they look past the pretty frames for evidence of judgement: shot selection under pressure, cuts that serve emotion rather than showing off, colour that is consistent across scenes, and sound that was mixed rather than merely present. We teach students to build reels around that evidence, because it is what converts a viewing into an interview.
The showreel is refreshed as new batches produce standout work — graduation films, practical-shoot footage, client projects students crewed on, and personal pieces that surprised everyone. Selection sessions are open arguments among instructors, and losing a slot to a classmate has motivated more great work than any assignment ever has.
Prospective students sometimes send us self-taught work and ask where they stand. Send it — we will tell you honestly what is working, what a course would change, and which program fits the gap. There is no better way to understand what OFI teaches than hearing our critique of your own footage.
Watch the reel again and you can map it to the courses: the cuts and pacing come from video editing and Premiere Pro classes; the coverage, movement and framing from cinematography practicals shot around Kathmandu; the moods and consistent looks from colour grading and DaVinci Resolve sessions; the animated titles and graphics from motion graphics; and the stills interleaved through it from photography assignments and photo walks. One reel, seven crafts, all trained in the same building.
The reel is best watched with sound on and full screen — much of what our editing and colour students learn lives in the audio mix and the grade, and a muted phone preview hides most of it. Give it two honest minutes; the work has earned that much.
