Learning to tell stories means learning to see people. Beyond the edit suites and camera drills, Omega Film Institute and its students step out into the community — to keep a village warm through winter, and to sit with elders who deserve to be remembered.
At OFI we believe the same empathy that makes a good filmmaker makes a good neighbour. Our students don’t just document Nepal — they show up for it. These are two of the initiatives we’ve carried out together with our students, hand in hand with our partner organisations.
High in the hills, winter is not a season — it is a hardship. In one remote mountain village, where terraced homes cling to the slopes and the cold settles in early, OFI ran a cloth distribution program to hand out warm jackets, blankets and clothing to families and children who needed them most.
Our team and students travelled up together, sorted and stacked the donations, and spent the day fitting warm jackets onto children one by one — small blue coats against a backdrop of stone houses and open sky. Whole communities gathered; elders, parents and little ones lined up in the winter sun, and by the end of the day, hundreds went home warmer than they woke up.
It was organised in association with our partner organisations, and made real by the students who gave their time, their hands and their hearts to it.

Some of the most important stories belong to the people we too often forget. OFI and its students spent a day at an old age home — not with cameras rolling, but simply to be present: to bring donations of food and essentials, to share a meal, and to sit and listen.
Our students handed over supplies, spent time with the residents, and reminded a room full of elders that they are seen and valued. For young filmmakers learning to find the humanity in every frame, there is no better classroom than an afternoon spent in the company of people who have lived whole lifetimes of stories.
It is a small thing, and it is everything — and it is exactly the kind of person we hope every OFI student becomes.
